A Little Priest
This song just about makes me want to vow to be a vegetarian. Seriously. I’ve had it running through my head all day, and guess what I was humming to myself while I ate kielbasa (sausage) tonight? Eating mystery meat while humming a song about cannibalism… I felt bad not being able to finish.
Maybe I should explain. A couple of weeks ago I agreed to play harp in the orchestra pit for a fundraising gala event. I think over twenty broadway hits will be performed, ten of which I’ll be playing in. One of them is ‘A Little Priest’ from Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (which was a musical/opera before becoming better known as the movie starring [shudder] Johnny Depp). It’s disgusting. Unfortunately, I have to listen to it a lot. I listen to it while I study my part. I play along to the soundtrack. I think I have the first verse or so memorized. Of course, I’m still really excited about being able to play with the orchestra, and I’m even excited to play A Little Priest; it has several interesting features that will make it exciting to perform. I just happen to think the song’s content is gross.
What I find so sad is that people like this stuff. It’s entertainment to them. Maybe the musical and movie have some redeeming points. Maybe they don’t. But for now, I’m perfectly content to not watch Sweeney Todd.
Well, it’s late. I need to edit ‘A Little Priest’ some before hitting the sack. G’night.

Bethany, why do you shudder before mentioning Johnny Depp’s name? Does this mean that you are not a fan of Mr. Depp?
But yeah, Sweeney Todd sounds pretty disturbing. I’ve never really understood how anybody could write a musical or film that essentially glorifies a serial killer (isn’t there enough violence in the world already?!?)
Good luck with the song, though. :)

Sweeney Todd is a GREAT musical. However, that’s probably my least favorite song in the whole thing.
